Buckeye Lake is the town’s water reservoir located adjacent to the Buckeye Recreation Center. The beautiful 6.5-acre mountain lake is surrounded by 60 acres of protected forest. It’s open year-round to enjoy the shoreside views, hike the lake trails, watch birds, fish, kayak, canoe and more. It’s definitely a top spot to enjoy fall colors, usually peaking in early to mid October.
It’s also a great spot for a picnic. For groups, a cover pavilion is available. Check at the Recreation Center for group reservations. Adjacent is a playground for kids, tennis courts and walking loop. The Buckeye Lake Loop hiking trail is a very scenic 1.6-mile trek around the lake. Also hike the Falls Trail to Buckeye Creek Falls. During select months, you may also sign out canoes, kayaks and fishing gear next door at the Recreation Center free of charge.
Buckeye Lake is designated hatchery supported. It receives a large annual infusion of brown, rainbow and brook trout. Casting into this picturesque lake, you can expect to reel in trout, channel catfish and sunfish. Fishing licenses are required for anyone over the age of 16 and are available for purchase on Beech Mountain at Fred’s General Mercantile Store. Fishing equipment and bait may be purchased there also. Another fishing spot is Lake Coffey.
No swimming or personal watercraft are allowed since it supplies the town’s drinking water.
