Totally ‘80s Retro Ski Weekend
The third weekend in February Beech visitors can travel back in time to the decade of big hair, neon colors, leg warmers and shoulder pads. Throughout downtown Beech Mountain there are various events celebrating everything ‘80s, such as: the ‘80s Ski Apparel Parade, ECTO-1 and DeLorean show car displays, ‘80s Family Fun Night; and speaking of night, the nightlife will be hopping with various venues hosting retro live music as well as karaoke. But that’s not all, you can join the fun by participating in the ‘80s apparel contest, or the Name That Tune contest, or you can even take home the crown if you win ‘80s Prom King and Queen. This event has been named one of the Top Twenty Events in the Southeast by the Southeast Tourism Society, so come early and stay late—you’ll definitely have a blast… from the past.
Totally Rad, Man!
Annual Roasting of the Hog: Independence Weekend
“Well, I’m in hog heaven! If that ain’t the best darn BBQ I’ve ever tasted” has been overheard on various occasions during this family-centered event. Held on the Saturday closest to Independence Day, the Town of Beech Mountain goes all out for this Mile High Forth celebration. Enjoy musical entertainment, games for kids, scenic lift rides during the day or dancing under the stars and a nighttime fireworks display above the summit of Beech Mountain.
And of course, the star attraction: fresh-cooked barbecue pork and turkey. Local firefighters cook the food, which backed by decades of perfecting the seasonings and charcoal blends, is said to result in the best barbeque in the High Country.
Crafts on the Green
Held each year on the first Saturday in August, the festival features the work of local artist and artisans. Scores of vendors from throughout the mountain region will carry quality art and crafts to be displayed and sold including fine jewelry, wood turnings, photography, paintings, pottery and more. Crafts on the Green is held at Gazebo Park next to Fred’s General Mercantile. Food, musical entertainment and a magic show for children will be available for the enjoyment of festival attendees. The Mile High Kite Festival
On Labor Day weekend, children of all ages are invited to cover Beech Mountain’s blue skies with kites of all shapes and colors. Located at more than 5,000 feet in elevation, the meadow behind Famous Brick Oven Pizzeria makes it easy to sail kites more than a mile above sea level.
This family friendly event features craft and food vendors, music and contests with prizes awarded for the biggest kite, smallest kite and best decorated. Other activities include races with kids pulling parachute kites, face painting and kite-flying demonstrations given by the professional kite flying clubs.
Don’t have a kite? Fret not. Kites are available for sale, and the first 150 kids (age 12 and under) each day receive a free one. For more info, please call 828.387.9283
Autumn at Oz
Each fall the old Land of Oz theme park awakens the second weekend in September for its yearly Autumn at Oz celebration. On this magical three-day weekend, fans come from near and far to walk the Yellow Brick Road and meet Dorothy, Munchkins, the Tin Man, the Lion, the Scarecrow, the Witches and, of course, the Great and Powerful Oz. Visit Auntie Em’s farm and hide from the tornado in the basement as the top of Beech magically becomes the fabled Land of Oz. There is fun, food, music, hayrides and memorabilia. And let’s not forget the flying monkeys!
Typical hours for the Autumn at Oz celebration are 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and attendees are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite Oz character. When tickets go on sale, they are available online at: landofoznc.com
