Welcome to the Beech Mountain 40th Anniversary Celebration Page. In 1981 Beech Mountain incorporated to become Eastern America’s Highest Town.  In the 40 years to follow the town flourished to become a year-round outdoor playground for residents and visitors alike. Below you’ll find details of various events that you and your family can participate in anytime of the year to help us celebrate turning 40.

Celebrating by the Month

To celebrate the Town of Beech Mountain will gift its residents and visitors  the “Present of the Month”.

Click the list below to reveal the gift and special events that will be hosted durning  each month. 

JANUARY

Present: New Sledding Hill

Beech Mountain works hard to keep our snow-loving friends safe and warm.  We’ve created a second sled hill for kids to allow for social distancing. We’ve also added temporary restrooms and a warming station beside the Visitor Center, which welcomes 12,000 guests per year.  Funded by the Town of Beech Mountain and Beech Mountain TDA.

Events: Winter Hike Challenge

Residents and visitors are invited to snowshoe or winter hike on Beech Mountain at their own pace throughout the winter. Simply register with the Buckeye Recreation Center, track your mileage and submit your Winter Hikes Form.  If you complete 40 miles or more, you will earn a commemorative patch as a gift for taking part in one of our 40th Celebration activities.

FEBRUARY

Present: Avery County Barn Quilt Trail

Self-Guided Driving Tour of the unique Avery County Barn Quilt Trail. Look for quilt squares on buildings from the comfort of your car and enjoy a drive throughout the Town and surrounding Avery County. The resurrection of the trail was made possible by a grant from the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area and produced by the Beech Mountain TDA. Events: I Spy 40 Signs Game

Everyone loves a good game of “I Spy”. Locate the “40” signs decorating the mountain, take a photo and post it on the Town of Beech Mountain’s Facebook page. All “40” signs are located on public property and easily viewed from your vehicle. This is a great activity for kids to do while the family is checking out the Avery County Barn Quilt Trail.

 

MARCH

Present: New Online Booking Tool

The Jackrabbit Software makes it easier for visitors to book lodging on our mountain by providing a one-click link to availability and booking at all lodging partners. Funded by the Beech Mountain TDA and hosted on beechmtn.com.

Events: Poster Project

We invite you to create and submit “Why I Love Beech Mountain” posters to the Buckeye Recreation Center for display during our May 1st Town-wide Birthday Celebration. Posters can be collected after the event, so just sign and mark your age on the back of your poster. There’s no age limit, everyone is invited to showcase their artistic talents.

APRIL

Present: Digital Designs 

Three of the Town’s websites have been   re-designed and are now live. The Parks and Recreation and the Visitor’s websites will deliver a user-friendly experience through more visuals and better flow of information. The Town’s website will provide easy access to information and ways to communicate with Town staff efficiently. Added features will enable users to pay bills online and watch council meetings from the comfort of  home.

Events: Clean Up Beech Day

Residents and visitors are invited to join  the annual Clean Up Beech Day.  Individuals clean roadsides throughout the town and return their bags of trash to Fire Station #1. Fun prizes are awarded in the categories of most trash, most miles covered and strangest item.  Sign up at the Buckeye Rec Center.

Events: Digital Time Capsule

Thanks for the Memories – submit your comments, photos, etc. to our Digital Time Capsule via Instagram or email to beechmountainvisitorcenter@gmail.com. Be sure to include your hometown. Your submission may be used in a slideshow during the Town’s Birthday Celebration on May 1st.

MAY

Present: Town Birthday Party

One of the Town’s most beloved special events, residents come together to celebrate Town achievements and enjoy each other’s company.   Veterans will be honored and new recreation programs and other Town Information will be shared.  Party-goers are invited to bring a small item or photo to place in the Town’s Time Capsule which will be buried during the event.  We will also be celebrating Arbor Day and have 40 seedlings for guests to help plant around Beech.  Information about all the 40th Celebration Presents will also be available.  Event details will be finalized and take into account Covid safety precautions.

Events: Shane Park Campsites Open

May will bring the opening of the Town of Beech Mountain’s Primitive Camping Area.

JUNE

Present: 40 Days of Family Fun

Beech Mountain has extended Family Fun Month to 40 Days in honor of the Town’s Birthday.  Enjoy a wide variety of programs and activities designed for all ages to experience the beauty of our mountain. This year Beech Mountain Parks & Recreation will hold a Naturalist Rally in celebration of Beech Mountain’s 40th Birthday. The rally will host experts across the spectrum for those curious about anything from mushrooms to salamanders!

Events: Museum Exhibits

The Beech Mountain Historical Society will be opening two new exhibits.  The Civil War Exhibit in the museum about the Battle on Beech and an audio exhibit featuring Ray Hick’s Jack Tales.

JULY

Present: Fireworks

Beech Mountain is known for its annual 4th of July Firework presentation.  Funded by the Town and the TDA.

Events: July 4th Weekend Events

Traditional 4th of July activities including the Town’s famous firework show will be the highlight for this month.

AUGUST

Present: Hi-Lo Adventure Trail

This Adventure Trail begins and ends on Beech Mountain. The purpose of the Hi-Lo Adventure Trail is to showcase the new economic corridor created between Beech Mountain and the surrounding areas of western NC and eastern TN. Hi-Lo maps are available at the Visitor Center and highlight fun activities and stops along the trail.  Funded by the Beech Mountain TDA.

Events: Hi-Lo Merchant Expo

Hi-Lo Adventure Trail opens and the Hi-Lo Merchant Expo will be held at the Buckeye Recreation Center to showcase and introduce regional merchants to each other, our residents and guests. Learn about the activities located on or near Watauga Lake as businesses off Beech Mountain discover the lodging, dining, recreation opportunities and other Town resources. Join us for this free event opened to the public. 

SEPTEMBER

Present: Upgraded Infrastructure 

The Town’s commitment to a progressive Infrastructure Upgrade Plan has led to many improvements in the ability of the town to provide services for residents and visitors. 

OCTOBER

Present: Webcam

October is Fins, Feathers and Foliage Month on Beech Mountain and will feature information about Fishing, Birding and tips to catch the best views of Fall Foliage.  We will “Turn On” the Buckeye Lake Webcam which will enable people to watch the migrating birds and tranquil lake.  The webcam is sure to be a hit with the local media.

Events: Buckeye Naturalist Activities

Fin, Feather and Foliage Month will showcase the beautiful Buckeye Recreation Center which will host educational talks and activities feature our fin and feathered friends.  Beech Mountain is quickly becoming a hot spot for Fishing and Birding enthusiasts.

NOVEMBER

Present: Trails Upgrades & Guided Hiking Events

During National Hiking Month we recognize all the upgrades to the over 27 miles of trails on Beech Mountain. The Recreation Department is continually enhancing and maintaining trails, and hosts numerous guided hikes. A map of the Town’s hiking trails and streets is available at the Visitor Center and on the Explore Beech Mountain App. Maps are provided free of charge courtesy of the Beech Mountain TDA.

Events: 40 Miles of Hikes Challenge

Residents and visitors are invited to hike on Beech Mountain at their own pace.  Simply register with the Buckeye Recreation Center, track your mileage and submit your hikes form.  If you complete 40 miles or more, you will earn a commemorative patch as a gift for taking part in one of our 40th Celebration activities.

DECEMBER

Present: Holiday Lights and Decor

In December, residents and visitors will enjoy the Beech Mountain Driving Tour of Homes Lit Up for the Holidays and a Christmas Parade where families can decorate and enter their own Floats.

Just Around the Bend

Take a Scenic Drive and count the 40 curves along Buckeye Creek Road located just past the Buckeye Recreation Center off of Pine Ridge Road.

During the Town’s Birthday Celebration in May, we want to recognize and thank our veterans for their service.
